As Focus Features ramps up for its 10th anniversary, chairman James Schamus and president Andew Karpen are on a buying tear. And with three Oscar nominations in hand for BAFTA front-runner "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," which is scoring at the box office ($42 million worldwide), they're in high spirits. "It's kicking ass," says Schamus. "Remember, Gary Oldman is revered by his peers."

Burgeoning digital distributor SnagFilms has been making changes of late. Most recent news is that the digital indie distributor has closed a new, seven-figure financing round, has added ex-Yahoo and Warner Bros. chief Terry Semel to its board and is plunging full steam ahead into distribution of narrative as well as documentary features.

Prescreen Streams Indie Films, Sundance Trailers

As Sundance approaches, the films that don’t score breakout status may not have to fade into obscurity. After attending Sundance 2010, former Groupon executive Shawn Bercuson realized that most of the films would never be seen again. He launched Prescreen.com, a movie marketing and distribution platform, in late 2011. Prescreen is a streaming service dedicated to indie films, aiming to help audiences “discover one new movie each day.”

Online French Film Festival Returns for Second Go-Round, Mounts Online Competition
