Talking 'Grandmaster' Costume Design with Oscar-Nominated William Chang

William Chang is certainly "The Grandmaster" of production/costume design and editing in terms of his long-time collaboration with director Wong Kar-wai. And even though he's received his first Oscar nomination for costume designing the lyrical Ip Man martial arts extravaganza, you can't separate his contribution to the overall look and editorial style of the movie.

WATCH: Martin Scorsese Interviews Wong Kar-wai on Oscar Shortlisted 'The Grandmaster'

On January 8, Martin Scorsese sat down with Wong Kar-wai at New York's Lighthouse Theatre to talk the latter's "The Grandmaster," shortlisted for a Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar. Incredibly, Wong has yet to receive a nomination from the Academy. But that could be rectified this coming Thursday, when the 2014 nominations list will be rolled out bright and early at 5:38am PST.

UPDATE: Samuel L. Jackson is joining the previously announced Martin Scorsese in presenting Wong Kar Wai's upcoming kung fu film "The Grandmaster," deeming it "Martin Scorsese and Samuel L. Jackson Present 'The Grandmaster.'" The film hits theaters in limited release this weekend, and has a national roll-out on August 30, via the Weinstein Company.

For Wong Kar-Wai's 'The Grandmaster,' Weinstein Plans Subtitled Wide Release, Oscar Campaign

Wong Kar-Wai's "The Grandmaster," now being officially presented by Martin Scorsese, is getting an ambitious release from the Weinstein Company, taking the chance that subtitles won't be a barrier in reaching a wider audience. They have not had much access to high-budget prestige martial arts films since Ang Lee's spectacular success with "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

Wong Kar Wai is coming to the Academy. On Monday, July 22, as part of their summer-long celebration of kung fu, the Academy will present an on-stage conversation between Wong and "Mad Men" showrunner Matthew Weiner, followed by an advance screening of "The Grandmaster."
