So we now know who will be walking up the red carpet steps of the Cannes Palais this year, and which world auteurs will be announced as they walk into the Theatre Lumiere. We already knew that Woody Allen is bringing Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams and Michael Sheen with opener Midnight in Paris on May 11, and that Croisette regular Gus Van Sant will open Un Certain Regard on May 12 with Restless, starring Mia Wasikowska.

Cannes Adds Kung Fu Panda 2, Pirates 4; Allen Controls Opener, Adds Baldwin to Rome Film

Cannes Adds Kung Fu Panda 2, Pirates 4; Allen Controls Opener, Adds Baldwin to Rome Film
No reviews of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, which does for the City of Light what Manhattan did for New York, will run ahead of its unveiling opening night at Cannes (6 PM Croisette time) on May 11. That means there will be no advance press screening that day. Much like the last Indiana Jones installment, Cannes critics will leap from their chairs to file ASAP. The press conference will take place the following day.

Malick's The Tree of Life is Going to Cannes, Duh

Many of us have already reported that Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life is going to Cannes, mainly because the fest had banked on booking it last year and was severely disappointed (and out the cost of a few hotel rooms) when Malick wasn't able to make it. I checked with stateside distributor Searchlight last week and they confirmed that it was going in advance of its May 27 stateside release, but could not say if the film would be in or out of competition. That call is being made by French distributor Europa and Summit International, which handles the film overseas. In any case, this means that Tree of Life Cannes faves Brad Pitt and Sean Penn will likely be walking the red carpet of the Palais.

Cannes Fest Preview 2011: Opener Midnight in Paris, Jurors DeNiro and Gondry, and What Else?

Cannes Fest Preview 2011: Opener Midnight in Paris, Jurors DeNiro and Gondry, and What Else?
Woody Allen's latest, Midnight in Paris, which will open the 64th Cannes Film Fest May 11 with Inglourious Basterds star Melanie Laurent presiding over the opening ceremony, stars Owen Wilson, who graces this new Van Gogh-inspired poster without any of his fellow cast members, who include a blonde Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Kathy Bates and Adrien Brody, not to mention French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. For the first time when the film opens on 400 screens in France on the same night, the Cannes Fest will supply theaters with a live stream of the opening ceremony.

Worthington Heads Home, Hurt Locker Reality Show, Brolin Talks

- Sam Worthington is heading home to Perth, Australia to shoot surfing drama Drift, in which he plays a photographic journalist who helped to turn surfing into a worldwide industry. After several big-budget Hollywood films, the actor is excited to be involved in this $11-million project, he says, to "put something back into my home town...There's something pure and true about surfing, and there is something pure and true about this script." (There was also something pure about his performance to in 2004's Somersault opposite Abbie Cornish). This may be the perfect project for him to rediscover the satisfaction of low-budget acting away from the blue-screen razzle-dazzle of Avatar, Clash of the Titans and Terminator: Salvation.

Woody Allen vs. Mike Leigh: One Hires Stars, Other Makes Them
At this stage of the game, there's no point in interviewing Woody Allen (age 74) or Mike Leigh (age 67) about their movies, because we know exactly what they're doing.
