Academy Reveals Key Dates for the Oscars

It's back to business as usual at the Oscars. The last awards season, which ended on March 2, was elongated by the Winter Olympics. This time the timetable for the 87th Academy Awards is determined by the already announced Oscar show date of February 22.

Writers Guild Awards Go for 'Captain Phillips' and 'Her'

Given all the films that aren't eligible, the Writers Guild Awards gives a boost to other movies in the Oscar race. Saturday night Spike Jonze took home original screenplay for "Her"--ironically, thanking the rival he beat, "American Hustle"'s David O. Russell, for helping him with his script-- and Billy Ray won for "Captain Phillips."

Writers Guild Nominations 2014 Show Strength of 'Dallas Buyers Club' and 'Blue Jasmine'

The WGA has unveiled its 2014 predictions. Again, PGA nominees "Dallas Buyers Club" and "Blue Jasmine" are showing strength while the Coens' "Inside Llewyn Davis" reveals its weakness. The Weinstein Co. did better today, and Peter Berg's "Lone Survivor" finally appears on the awards scoreboard.

All Award Season Screenplays Now Available Online: Oscar Frontrunners and Contenders UPDATED

All of the award season screenplays are now available online. In the glut of promotional material sent out to Academy members at this time of year, so far copies of real books like "Lone Survivor," "The Book Thief," "12 Years a Slave" and "Philomena" by Martin Sexsmith and Will Haygood's "The Butler" have arrived, as well as screenplays for "Inside Llewyn Davis," "August: Osage County," "12 Years a Slave" and "Lee Daniels' The Butler."

Why Paul Schrader May Not Open His Oscar Ballot This Year

Paul Schrader: "I find this escalating media chatter regarding film society awards, Oscar handicapping and promotional gimmicks increasingly tiresome. This year I declined to submit a selection to Film Comment's year's best list. I stopped voting for DGA and WGA awards last year and for the first time since 1976, when I was privileged to be accepted into the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, I may leave my Oscar ballot unopened."

Writers Guild Awards Change Guidelines, Netflix's 'House of Cards' Now Eligible for 2014 TV Awards

With the just-announced revisions to the Writers Guild Awards guidelines, Netflix's "House of Cards" has become eligible for the 2014 TV awards, to be held on February 1. The guidelines now include series that have been produced for initial exhibition in new media, permitting them to compete with TV series in the script and series categories.
