Weekend Box Office: Super 8 Pulls $38 Million, Beats X-Men: First Class for Number One Slot

Weekend Box Office: Super 8 Pulls $38 Million, Beats X-Men: First Class for Number One Slot
As Paramount labored to both downplay expectations and build up word-of-mouth via advance sneaks, Super 8 exceeded box office predictions and got off to a strong start. Anthony D'Alessandro reports:Super 8’s projector bulbs burned brighter than expected as Paramount’s sci-fi drama bested its lowest box office estimates by 52% for a wondrous weekend estimate of $38 million. Concern that J.J. Abrams’ cinematic love letter to Steven Spielberg would bow to dismal results provoked Paramount to hammer the film’s critical acclaim into gold by unspooling the film on Thursday at 300-plus sites (including 239 IMAX hubs) via a Twitter promotion. One couldn't expect record grosses from a limited release: thus Thursday’s $1 million take amounted to cherries on Paramount’s sundae.

Weekend Preview: X-Men Lands with Naked Mystique, Indies Beginners and Submarine Are Must-Sees

It's a weekend of stellar and star-packed openings, with well-reviewed X-Men: First Class opening (finally fanboys get a glimpse at naked Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, picture below), along with buzzing indies Beginners, Submarine and Beautiful Boy. While Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor shine in Mike Mills' Beginners, and in rookie Richard Ayoade's Submarine the "excruciating and the hilarious mingle nearly to perfection, Shawn Ku's Beautiful Boy throws a pity party. Stars Maria Bello and Michael Sheen give as much as they can, but their audience will be severely limited by this grief-stricken drama that labors more than it elevates.

Will Thor Be Latest Jewel in Marvel Crown? Marvel Talks Recipe for Success

Will Thor Be Latest Jewel in Marvel Crown? Marvel Talks Recipe for Success
Marvel Entertainment is a model for a company that has cannily looked out for its own interests as it seeks to exploit and protect its rich endowment of comic characters and stories. With Shakespearean actor-director Kenneth Branagh's epic adventure Thor hitting theaters May 6, Anthony D'Alessandro parses the Marvel performance thus far. Like the hammer-wielding god Thor, Marvel Entertainment has smashed the film industry’s bias against superhero projects ever since rolling out the 2000 feature adaptation of Spider-Man ($822 million worldwide B.O.), ushering in the golden age of comic-book cinema. To date, the Marvel feature adaptations, both licensed and inhouse productions, have racked up $7.4 billion at the global box office. The media company will continue to raise that figure with the 22nd Marvel superhero adaptation this weekend, Thor, which is on tap to rake in $55-$70 million at 3,955 theaters (the average domestic bow for a Marvel title is $65 million) after collecting $125 million abroad.

X-Men: First Class: A Critique of Lawrence's Mystique; New International Trailer

Here is MTV's take on this new still of Jennifer Lawrence as X-Men: First Class's Mystique: "This may not be the most engaging of press images, but we’re satisfied with a static shot of the iconic character in full makeup—not to mention confident we’ll see Mystique in a variety of more dynamic, even seductive poses within the full film. It’s kind of her thing."
