Amazon Releases 2012 Bestsellers; Self-Publishing, Romance and Erotica Ruled

Amazon's 2012 list of bestsellers highlights the increasing impact of self-published authors and their relationship with traditional publishers. Four of the five romance titles on the list were originally independently published, and then scooped up by a traditional publisher that pushed the hot titles into the bestselling stratosphere.

Now that the final "Twilight" installment has come and proven its box office powers, it remains to be seen whether any of a host of other supernatural romance YA sensations can cast the same spell on moviegoers. "Beautiful Creatures" (February 3), based on "The Caster Chronicles" and starring Alice Englert and Alden Ehrenrich as curse-crossed young lovers, is certainly trying to hook those feeling Bella-and-Edward withdrawal. The last of the “Twilight” movies has now reached theatres, and “Catching Fire,” the second book in Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games” trilogy, is in production. But Hollywood is by no means finished making movies about powerful teenagers. At least a dozen young adult novels – featuring girls who must fight werewolves, vanquish evil angels, discover why they are immortal, evade cannibals and, in one case, fall in love with a shape-shifting tiger -- have been scooped up by major studios and minor production companies. What makes these young adult novels even more alluring is the fact that their audience is not limited to teenagers. They are avidly read by large numbers of adult women.
