Sundance Institute Pushes Deeper Into Digital Distribution Alternatives--Analysis

Sundance Institute Pushes Deeper Into Digital Distribution Alternatives--Analysis
Two things pop from this week's announcement from Robert Redford's Sundance Institute about their "Artists Services Initiative." First, who it's for--Sundance Institute filmmakers only--and second, how it contrasts with Robert De Niro's for-profit New York-based Tribeca Films, which picks up films to release, some of them from its own festival.

Video: A Quick Look at Google +

I have not been invited yet to Google +, although frustratingly, others have invited me to join. But Google had to shut down that option after too many people rushed to sign up. Check out Google's demonstration video for Google +. If you're like me, Facebook has become this huge mass of disparate folks ranging from close family and friends to work colleagues and acquaintances and people I don't even know. Twitter is easier--anyone can follow me, and I can select who I follow. But when one group starts live-tweeting a movie or football game--that could be done as a Google + hangout without either imposing it on disinterested Twitter followers or asking people to temporarily unfollow you.

YouTube's Figglehorn Goes 3-D as Lionsgate's Night of the Living Fred

Lucas Cruikshank's YouTube creation and sensation "Fred Figglehorn" is getting a 3-D movie. Lionsgate, Varsity Pictures and The Collective are producing Night of the Living Fred, which is a follow-up to 2010's Fred: The Movie (which debuted on Nickelodeon). While Lionsgate has North American distribution rights, they are selling international rights to the film. Family Guy's David A. Goodman wrote the script and John Fortenberry (Blue Mountain State) is directing. Lionsgate production/development president Michael Paseornek says:“We're always excited to partner with talent who has a direct relationship with a broad online fan base, because there are so many possibilities for engaging that audience throughout the filmmaking and marketing process.  Lucas is a true next generation entertainer, and we are so proud to bring Fred, the unique character he created, to his fans in 3D. Fred has already conquered the online world and achieved record ratings for Nickelodeon, and we believe he's ready for his feature film debut."
