New Cast Join Affleck, Cavill in Superman/Batman Flick

Director Zack Snyder has added Oscar-winning character actress Holly Hunter to the cast of the still untitled Superman/Batman movie that Warner Bros. has wisely pushed back to May 6, 2016. He has also cast muscled action players Callan Mulvey ("300: Rise of an Empire") and Tao Okamoto ("The Wolverine"). Departing from the established DC canon (something Marvel rarely does), all three actors will play characters newly created for the film.

Will Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor in 'Batman vs. Superman' Invigorate the Franchise?

I have no problem with this morning's news that Jesse Eisenberg is set to play Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder's "Batman vs. Superman," and Jeremy Irons will take over fellow senior Brit Michael Caine's role as Bat butler Alfred. At least--as the vociferous Twitter reaction indicates--Eisenberg represents a change-up in the next "Superman" movie.

More Details on Ben Affleck in Snyder's Superman/Batman UPDATED

Ben Affleck would not play Batman unless he had a role in how this script turns out. He will have a strong hand at Warner Bros., which backed him on "The Town" and the Oscar-winning "Argo." If this works out he could have a major franchise to play with for years ahead. Affleck tends to do better as an actor in his own pictures--which are often smarter than average studio fare.

POLL: Who Should Play Batman in New Batman-Superman Mashup?

As we all know, the big news out of Comic-Con was that Zack Snyder will direct a "Man of Steel" sequel for Warner Bros. that will feature a Superman-Batman team-up. Beefy Henry Cavill is Superman; but Christian Bale won't be returning to Gotham. So the question remains: Who will play Batman? Take our poll, below.

Why Batman and Superman Mashup is a Bad Idea--And Reveals Warner Bros. Weakness

You know Malcolm Gladwell's "Blink"? That moment when you look at something and you know it's wrong? That happens to me when studios announce a new project that is a really bad idea. Some movies based on good ideas just turn out badly, and plenty of great movies turn out to to be less than commercial, or cost too much to turn a profit. The Superman and Batman movie is a bad idea.

Immersed in Movies: Snyder, Cavill and More Talk Unapologetic 'Man of Steel,' a Father's Day Superman Gift

I couldn't help thinking about my late father when watching "Man of Steel." He adored Superman and I still remember asking him as a child what the difference was between Batman and Superman. He said Batman was about darkness and Superman was about light -- a perfect complement. In later years, though, he bemoaned the prevailing cynicism and nihilism that led to Superman going out of fashion.

Review and Roundup: 'Man of Steel' Debate is Raging

Bryan Singer is smiling. The lag time on getting the Superman reboot up and running, after Warner Bros. decided that Singer took the wrong course with his 2006 Richard Donner-inflected "Superman Returns," has not been kind to "Man of Steel." A return to form for the DC side of the comics universe this is not. "Man of Steel" errs so far on the side of "Whiz!""Bang!" ""Pow!" that it makes me long for Roland Emmerich or Michael Bay, who would have done a far better job with the action pyrotechnics. Scene after scene devolves to soul-crushingly dull man on man combat.

Immersed in Movies: 'Man of Steel' Set Visit: Making Superman Relevant Again (VIDEO)

There's no better metaphor for "Man of Steel" than the Faded Glory emblem on the side of the building behind Henry Cavill's Superman. Zack Snyder's existential reboot is all about returning the glory to DC's legendary superhero (which turned 75 this year), and making him stand tall again beside Batman in the 21st century. In fact, I asked Snyder about faded glory during a visit to the Smallville set two years ago in Plano, Illinois, outside of Chicago, where you could glimpse the wreckage of General Zod's attack on Clark Kent's hometown.
