Thompson on Hollywood

Not to raise expectations, but that previously untitled Spider-Man reboot that is currently shooting with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone has landed an uninspired official name based on one of the franchise's long running comic books: The Amazing Spider-Man -- not to be confused with any other less amazing Spider-Man movie that has come before. The film, directed by Marc Webb from a script by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent will be released entirely in 3-D on July 3, 2012.

Sony also released their latest full-body image of Andrew Garfield (who lost the supporting actor BAFTA Sunday to Geoffrey Rush) in his Spidey regalia. Again, it doesn't seem rockingly new.

"The film... will be released entirely in 3-D on July 3, 2012. "

Does that mean that it will not be available in 2-D?

This post is less inspiring than I thought. Come on, the second Spider Man with Maguire was pretty decent. The first one was a great starter, though I have to say the last one was a sad horrible ending to the franchise. I have good feelings about this, come on this is entertainment, we don't need to be pretentious just because it is a super hero and not some Black Swan or Winter's Bone of some sorts.

Sophia, the title references the longest-running Spidey book, making it a perfect nod to Spidey's rich history. It's the equivalent of referencing the Dark Knight in a Batman title. Fans will love it. You probably should let someone who actually reads comics write the next Spider-Man post for TOH!
