Tom Perkins: Plagiarist and Internet Douche

Thompson on Hollywood

While Cinematical refers to him as "film critic," Tom Perkins does not deserve the title.

The FilmXTRATOM blogger has overtly plagiarized film reviews from and other sources for over a year, and after denying it several times, he finally admitted to his wrongdoing. JoBlo has posted his apology letter.

What do they teach them in these schools? The young Brit blames YouTube for his actions:

"Now I know you don't want to hear any excuses but my main reason for starting to plagiarise a while ago was mainly because YouTube has become so easily corruptible these days I kind of wanted to see how corruptible it can be. Which of course got way out of hand and I forgot that I was taking advantage of your hard work."

Here's his YouTube page, currently "under construction." Perkins plans to "start from scratch" with his reviews, which is hard to imagine: he plagiarized every single review he ever wrote. TheFollowingReview tracked down the source for each one. Perkins' host site (Hey U Guys) has dropped him, and dubs Perkins internet douche of the year."

Now that title may stick.

No. Slug's another word for headline.

For starters, I didn't name that site, and you'll notice that I didn't call Perkins a "douchebag" on there either.

In fact, sister site eFilmCritic posts all of the same content under a slightly more professional name that I and others often link to instead. Don't get all giddy just because Google turned up an outlet of mine with, yes, a proudly provocative moniker. It hardly makes me a hypocrite for calling out a flagrant plagiarist.

WG - Unless I'm mis-interpreting your comment in that Tom Perkins deserves a more maggot-like description. If that's the case, then my apologies on my own name-calling and misinterpreting your comment.

how does 'douche' make the cut (or not) compared to 'bitchslap'? is one in good taste and the other isn't? aren't both trying to be provocative - whether it works or not is a different matter ...

    Why exactly is that, rather.

  • William Goss | May 12, 2010 4:14 AMReply

    Why is exactly that, "jl"?

And Sergio, it says "posted by Sophia Savage" at the bottom of this post. I too was thrown off by Anne's newfound pride in name-calling.

A "douche" ??? Anne, is that you or Erik Childress?

  • jl | May 12, 2010 3:02 AMReply

IF this is the same William Goss from Hollywood "Bitchslap" then you're the douche ha ha ha ha ha ha

  • William Goss | May 12, 2010 2:38 AMReply

Look, we needed a slug, and "douchebag" -- however accurate -- doesn't quite make the cut around our site.

    Thanks for reading, though!

Holy crap! I didn't even know he was stealing my stuff until I read that! It was frigging word for word.
