"From Up on Poppy Hill"

The trailer for the latest Studio Ghibli film, "From Up on Poppy Hill," has landed. Written by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son, Goro, this quiet coming-of-age drama recalls one of Ghibli's best films, 1995's "Whisper of the Heart."

"From Up on Poppy Hill" is based on the Manga of the same title, and centers on a group of teenagers attempting to save their clubhouse from demolition in the wake of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics preparations. Like "Whisper of the Heart" (also from a Miyazaki script), "Poppy Hill" seems to linger in melancholic adolescent exchanges, with sentences that trail off and complicated revelations about family issues.

As The Playlist points out, this is the first Ghibli film since the '90s not to be taken under Disney's distribution wing. Instead, GKIDS, who facilitated the excellent Ghibli touring program earlier this year, is taking the reins.

No U.S. release date has yet been announced.

I have a subtitled copy of this from a Japanese video store. I haven't watched it yet, but I will soon.
Some sixth sense tells me this won't be anywhere near as good as WHISPER OF THE HEART, which I consider the finest animated movie I've ever seen.
