The epic, six-minute trailer for Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis' "Cloud Atlas," debuting at Toronto in September, is here. The adaptation of David Mitchell's novel stars -- deep breath -- Tom Hanks, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving, Bae Doona, Zhou Xun and Hugh Grant, many of whom are in multiple roles and disguises.

The six-minute trailer for Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis' "Cloud Atlas," debuting at Toronto in September, is here. The adaptation of David Mitchell's novel stars -- deep breath -- Tom Hanks, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving, Bae Doona, Zhou Xun and Hugh Grant, many of whom are in multiple roles and disguises.

The trailer, like the novel, spans a mind-boggling number of eras and scenarios, including a 19th-century ship off the coast of New Zealand run by a captain (Sturgess) with a deadly brain bug, an American investigative journalist (Berry) looking into a thriller-style nuclear conspiracy, a gangster-turned-novelist with manicured facial hair (Hanks!) throwing a literary reviewer off a building, and an ominous Kona warrior (Grant, sporting tribal facepaint).

TOH reported on "Cloud Atlas" at the Cannes market, where Warner Bros. bought North American rights for $20 million.

The trailer must be seen to be believed; UPDATED slideshow and tongue-in-cheek video commentary from Tykwer, Andy and Lana Wachowski are also below.
