Trailer and Video Commentary: Tykwer and Wachowskis Talk Toronto-Bound, Epic, Mind-Boggling 'Cloud Atlas' UPDATED

The epic, six-minute trailer for Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis' "Cloud Atlas," debuting at Toronto in September, is here. The adaptation of David Mitchell's novel stars -- deep breath -- Tom Hanks, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving, Bae Doona, Zhou Xun and Hugh Grant, many of whom are in multiple roles and disguises.

'Cloud Atlas'

The six-minute trailer for Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis' "Cloud Atlas," debuting at Toronto in September, is here. The adaptation of David Mitchell's novel stars -- deep breath -- Tom Hanks, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving, Bae Doona, Zhou Xun and Hugh Grant, many of whom are in multiple roles and disguises.

The trailer, like the novel, spans a mind-boggling number of eras and scenarios, including a 19th-century ship off the coast of New Zealand run by a captain (Sturgess) with a deadly brain bug, an American investigative journalist (Berry) looking into a thriller-style nuclear conspiracy, a gangster-turned-novelist with manicured facial hair (Hanks!) throwing a literary reviewer off a building, and an ominous Kona warrior (Grant, sporting tribal facepaint).

TOH reported on "Cloud Atlas" at the Cannes market, where Warner Bros. bought North American rights for $20 million.

Thompson on Hollywood

Born and raised in Manhattan, Anne Thompson grew up going to the Thalia and The New Yorker and wound up at grad Cinema Studies at NYU. She worked at United Artists and Film Comment before heading west as that magazine's west coast editor. She wrote for the LA Weekly, Sight and Sound, Empire, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly before serving as West Coast Editor of Premiere. She wrote for The Washington Post, The London Observer, Wired, More, and Vanity Fair, and did staff stints at The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. She eventually took her blog Thompson on Hollywood to Indiewire. She taught film criticism at USC Critical Studies, and continues to host the fall semester of “Sneak Previews” for UCLA Extension.
