Fox Searchlight is releasing the online trailer for Tony Goldwyn's R-rated Conviction today (below). This trailer will debut on E.T. tonight and hit theaters attached to the Duplass brothers' summer comedy Cyrus on Friday. The movie opens October 12.
The retitled Conviction--formerly Betty Anne Waters, based on a true story--looks like a soft lob down the middle of the Oscar plate to me. I was in tears by the end of this trailer. Now I'm a sucker for family sacrifice dramas. And when two-time Oscar-winner Hilary Swank is good, she's very good (Amelia was impossible, nobody could have breathed life into that starched heroine). And this looks to be well inside her comfort zone: a young blue-collar woman puts herself through law school to free her wrongly accused brother (Sam Rockwell) from prison. (It's The Accused meets Erin Brockovich.) And Rockwell has earned his stripes, from Moon to Iron Man 2. It may be his time.
