"The Man I Love"

Auteurs! week concludes at Trailers from Hell with director Allan Arkush introducing Raoul Walsh's "The Man I Love," starring Ida Lupino in a powerhouse performance.

Walsh's atmospheric noir soaper was originally intended for Ann Sheridan in the lead role. This troubled production received mixed reviews, but it touched an audience nerve and became a big hit. One of Martin Scorsese’s favorites.

This was the movie that put Ida Lupino on my list of all-time favorite actresses (#2 after Barbara Stanwyck). I've never seen another Hollywood movie that was quite like this. Unforgettable ending--and not what you'd expect from either of the multiple genres this film dabbles in.
