Roy Scheider in "52 Pickup"

Olson on Noir! concludes at Trailers from Hell, with screenwriter Josh Olson introducing John Frankenheimer's "52 Pickup," starring Roy Scheider and Ann-Margret. The late Elmore Leonard penned the screenplay, adapted from his own novel.

This was a bright spot in a fallow period for Frankenheimer after disasters like PROPHECY. The magic charms of Leonard kicked in big time with his script, part of his lucrative evolution from westerns to suspense and crime films.

john glover was by far the most engrossing part of this highly entertaining film, with clarence williams III coming in close second. and soundtrack is 80 synth nearly at its best. the two video tape narration parts are the stand out parts for me... and every other moment glover is on camera, speaking in that dopey bawlmerese (baltimore) accent.
