So far the Weinstein Co. marketing behind Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" is genius; it builds intensity and anticipation while maintaining a sense of mystery. That's rare these days. This new teaser introduces us to Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams as Lancaster (said to be based on Scientology leader L. Ron Hubbard and Mary Sue Dodd), and Joaquin Phoenix's troubled alcoholic Freddie, whom we met in the first teaser (both below).
Here's Indiewire on how the sneak footage revealed by the Weinsteins played at Cannes. The film hits theaters October 12. The open question is whether fest-averse Anderson will agree to premiere it at a film festival. Programmers at Venice, Telluride, Toronto and New York are all crossing their fingers.
