Universal Shooting for 'Bridesmaids' Gold with Early 'Pitch Perfect' Buzz Release

Universal is booking "Pitch Perfect," starring Anna Kendrick, on September 28 in select cities, a week earlier than the wide release. The college acapella comedy has been tracking well (according to Universal) with the most extensive tester screening campaign in the studio's history.

Universal was upbeat enough about audience reaction at hundreds of countrywide screenings over the past few weeks to launch an early limited release in order to capitalize on the buzz. The social-media conversation surrounding the film earned a Fizziology report of more than 90% positive.

Will "Pitch Perfect" mimic the success of 2011's "Bridesmaids," which was also greeted with wildly positive tester screenings and buzz? Universal is banking on it with a poster that is practically a carbon copy of the Kristen Wiig hit. "Bridesmaid"'s Rebel Wilson also stars in "Pitch Perfect." The trailer (below) also calls to mind Universal's cheer-classic "Bring It On."
