Stewart's Dalliance Could Hit 'Twilight' Finale, Universal's 'Snow White' Sequel, IFC's 'On the Road'

It makes sense that Universal would seek a new and improved sequel, now that they know what worked. The studio was encouraged by the numbers "SWATH" returned: $153.5 million domestic and $228.4 million foreign, for a $383 million total. That's not as big as it looks if you figure that the movie carried a hefty $175 million pricetag before global marketing costs; theaters return about half of the gross to the studio, which also takes in returns from TV, VOD and DVDs.

Also in the works for Stewart is a potential Oscar campaign for Walter Salles' Cannes entry "On the Road," in which she earned strong reviews in a sultry role as Dean Moriarty's freewheeling and sexy teen bride Marylou. Again, Stewart's reps face a challenge helping Stewart to recover from wall to wall tabloid coverage in the months ahead if she is to be taken seriously as a potential supporting actress. IFC still plans a serious awards campaign and a December opening, and reports that Stewart "remains supportive of the film." Fall fest slots will soon be announced (Stewart's participation is part of that negotiation). The film has already grossed over $2 million in several European countries including France.

Stewart has to move on from "Twilight" in any case. Many Hollywood actresses have endured the wrath of their fans and come out ahead, from Elizabeth Taylor to Ingrid Bergman, who after she returned from European exile after her extra-marital affair with Roberto Rossellini, won the Oscar for "Anastasia." Stewart's indiscretion seems minor compared to what others have survived. Robert Downey Jr.'s career turned around after he served a term in prison for drug use; Lindsay Lohan's is still in freefall. It all comes down to the quality of the work. A year after Lana Turner was embroiled in a murder scandal in which her daughter killed Turner's boyfriend Johnny Stompanato, the "love goddess" released her biggest hit, "Imitation of Life."

Stewart's career will rest on how well she delivers her future movies. Another promising role on Stewart's dance card as a serious dramatic actress: an ambitious adaptation of William Styron’s 1951 novel, "Lie Down In Darkness." Scott Cooper ("Crazy Heart," upcoming "Out of the Furnace") is directing for Open Road Films. The film centers on Stewart as beauty Peyton Loftis in 1950s Virginia, who has to deal with her dysfunctional family: a jealous, nasty mom, a lusty alcoholic father and a crippled sister. A piece of cake.

Kristen is the actress most integrates I've seen, it has only one ambition: to do their work honestly be dedicated and a have good result, she does not want appear she did not want to be a celebrity she just wants to be a respected actress, she has talent and will get there!

  • Are We Sure This Is Even Real? | August 7, 2012 6:26 PMReply

There is something very odd and contrived is going on with this story. And a lot of sites like Gossip Cop and now US Weekly are working very hard to push the 'they didn't have sex' story. If Pattinson is part of a hoax I will be very disappointed. Stewart, I can readily believe it, her ambition far outweighs her integrity. But I thought Pattinson was different. But it can't be denied that both have movies and DVD's to promote. We live and we learn I guess.

  • Time To Wake Up | August 7, 2012 3:23 PMReply

Wake up fangirls. Stewart had sex with another man. Those pictures are just one day. What about all the other days and nights, the on-location sex? Stewart herself wants out. She just didn't have the guts to leave her relationship with Pattinson with decency and class. .

Yes she has a large fan base, I am one of them ..... I'm supporting her now more than ever, it is a wonderful actress and very young, will overcome this moment!! GO KRISTEN!!

    bien merci

  • vivianR | August 7, 2012 11:57 AMReply

no body no if Krist had sex with Sander, or not so I think it is wrong to emply that she did. No one saw them having sex, so lay off. This is hard eough for Rob and Kristen

  • Work will determine Stewart's future but she did have sex with Sanders | August 7, 2012 6:30 AMReply

As Thompson correctly says, the long term prospects of Stewart will be down to the work and nothing else. But any dispute over whether or not she slept with Sanders is ridiculous. Those pictures clearly show sexual intimacy. In the unlikely event they hadn't yet slept together, does anyone with half a brain really doubt that was on the cards? You don't apologize in the extreme the way Sanders and Stewart did for petting. They had sex. The End.

Sanders and Stewart's next collaboration should be a sex tape.

  • crisk | August 7, 2012 3:01 PM

You're ridiculous, go look for what to do, you're sick!

  • Suz | August 6, 2012 6:28 PMReply

She's a bad actress with one facial expression.

  • cisk | August 7, 2012 2:58 PM

No, Kristen is great, one of the best, I'm sure it will grow a lot, she is amazing!!

  • Elaine | August 6, 2012 8:00 PM

How does she only have one facial expression? That is the most stupid complaint i have ever heard especially considering it can be refuted with a quick google link up! Are you a Rob Pattinson fan by any chance? I hear he is single now. Maybe you are in with a shot!!

  • Mike | August 6, 2012 7:43 PM

She really is not a bad actress Kristen is really good in her Indie films she looks more at home with those kind of roles .For exa. she was excellent in 'On The Road' which she portrayed Mary Lou that was a indie film.
She does not really show what she is capable of in big film studio films.

  • Anne Thompson | August 6, 2012 6:24 PMReply

Agreed, Universal has time to give Sanders another assignment and keep the sequel moving forward.

The Twihards are not the problem. While some Twilight fans have turned against her, I have also seen massive support for Stewart all over twitter and youtube. She has a very strong, vocal fanbase worldwide. Yes, the pictures did indicate a degree of intimacy with her Snow White director, but there was no clear cut evidence of sexual intecourse in any of them. I believe she'll be fine in the long run. She just has to continue to lay low in the meantime, concentrate on her upcoming promotional/film preparation obligations and work on repairing her relationship with Pattinson, which seemed to be her biggest concern in her released apology. If anything, she most likely will come out of this a much stronger individual. Claire Danes and Sienna Miller , both young female actresses in their 20s who overcame similar scandals, come to mind.

  • Elaine | August 6, 2012 7:54 PM

That's nice to hear that she has a lot of supporters. I've not paid much attention to the Twilight films as they are not my thing, but i have liked Kristen in her other films, and after seeing all the crap thrown at her this last week or two i will pay more attention her her upcoming projects. The best revenge she can have against all the naysayers is to come back stronger than ever. I am very glad i didn't have paparazzi following me when i was 20 years old! I've done much worse things than kiss a work colleague! ;)

  • Molly | August 6, 2012 7:42 PM

I agree, Stewart does have a very strong, vocal fan-base. She does seem to have much support across the internet. Now if she could just shake off Pattinsons' fans, which personally I think is detrimental to her, I think she will do well. I think she if a fine young actress.

  • sam | August 6, 2012 5:16 PMReply

You are talking to a generation of people who are obsessed with 50 shades of grey. Is everyone really that shocked? Kissing a married man is not a crime. You are comparing her to people who have committed a crime and gone to jail. Really she screwed up and made a very bad decision but don't most people in their early twenties make bad choices every now and then. Give her a break. The media act like they want a crucifiction including this article. She is just a girl who made a bad decision get over it.

  • Alex | August 6, 2012 4:43 PMReply

You forgot one question: Would Rupert Sander's wife be willing to let her husband work with Kristen Stewart? There's communication between Rupert Sanders and Kristen Stewart now? It doesn't seem the case. It's impossible to do SWATH2 with both. Wait and see how RS gets a new gig soon from Universal.

  • paul | August 6, 2012 4:21 PMReply

didn't a while back the head of universal say they wanted to focus on the huntsman more for the sequel. i saw the film, and his story could make an interesting movie. i probably wouldn't pay to see it to begin with, the first movie was bad enough. if i was hemsworth i would walk now on this. he has better projects on his plate vs this movie. as for otr, i think hellund deserves more of a shot at awards then stewart. she was ok, but he was great. it they wanted the film or her to get awards weinstein should have bought the movie. there are too better movies out there that i see getting it before otr and stewart.

  • Elaine | August 6, 2012 4:18 PMReply

Are Twihards seriously not over this yet? So overblown. I actually think it will drum up even more interest if Sanders and Stewart come back, but i doubt it will work out that way. What an idiot Sanders is to throw a spanner in the works on his first feature film. Stewart will be fine regardless. If anything this helps her be rid of the Twilight legacy way faster than she would have. I like her and i enjoyed the first film, so i will see it.
