Trailer Watch: Ironclad Violence, Compressed

Repetition can have a numbing effect. A dramatic scene viewed on repeat loses its power; repeating a joke kills its humor. But this violent Ironclad trailer (below) definitely tests one's gore quotient. Hack! Maim! Plunge! Repeat! Incoming!

Ironclad focuses on a brave and brutal pack of Knights Templar who defend a castle from King John in 13th-century England. Starring Paul Giamatti, James Purefoy, and Brian Cox, the film fuses the gory, stylized violence of 300 with the venerable heroism of Braveheart. Anyone remember Paul Verhoeven's Flesh + Blood?

This violent mash-up suggests that Ironclad might make it onto the list of the goriest scenes of all time:

Thompson on Hollywood

Born and raised in Manhattan, Anne Thompson grew up going to the Thalia and The New Yorker and wound up at grad Cinema Studies at NYU. She eventually took her blog Thompson on Hollywood to Indiewire. She taught film criticism at USC Critical Studies, and continues to host the fall semester of “Sneak Previews” for UCLA Extension.
