Weekend Preview: 'Bourne' Without 'Bourne' And the Latest from Streep, Delpy, Ferrell & Spike Lee

Thompson on Hollywood By Sophia Savage | Thompson on Hollywood August 9, 2012 at 6:13PM

Everything's coming up Fresh this weekend, so it just comes down to taste. If you're in the mood for "Bourne" without Jason Bourne, Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz do a fine job (and have the longest motorcycle chase sequence ever) in "narrative architect" Tony Gilroy's "The Bourne Legacy" (Edward Norton is also worth seeing). By the end of the film, you wish for a sequel that unites Renner's Aaron Cross with Damon's Jason Bourne; otherwise the whole enterprise seems pointless.

Screen faves Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones get intimate in "Hope Springs," while funny men Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis take on politics in "The Campaign." Spike Lee's "Red Hook Summer" arrives in New York, while Julie Delpy's comedy sequel "2 Days in New York" is now opening in limited theaters after its VOD debut, and Anne Emond's absorbing drama "Nuit #1" arrives in Los Angeles.

"2 Days in New York."
Sundance "2 Days in New York."

"The Bourne Legacy‬" Universal, US | DIR: Tony Gilroy CAST: Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac, Edward Norton, Joan Allen | "Bourne" Leads the Pack on Criticwire | Thanks to Renner, it Delivers | 63% Fresh.

‪"2 Days in New York‬" Magnolia, GER/FR/BEL | DIR: Julie Delpy CAST: Julie Delpy, Chris Rock, Alexia Landeau, Albert Delpy | Delphy Tells Indiewire Why She's Not Crazy | Indiewire: "Even when it stumbles, however, '2 Days in New York' retains an airy vibe, reflecting its dogged intention of charming its viewers. Delpy can't shake the disposable nature of her storytelling, mainly because of the ongoing sense that we've been through this before. But seeing as "2 Days in Paris" never felt especially irksome, this affable sequel deserves the same insouciant shrug." | 70% Fresh.

"Red Hook Summer‬" Variance, US | DIR: Spike Lee CAST: Clark Peters, Jules Brown, Toni Lysaith, James Ransone | ThePlaylist: "As a director, Lee has become less angry, less divisive, and more democratic about his portraits of race and culture, and his collective outrage feels more like a byproduct of general social consciousness than issue-obsessed proselytizing – and the film is the better for it. Ultimately, Lee’s clarity of vision hasn’t been this sharp or unique since before “Crooklyn,” and it’s thrilling with “Red Hook Summer” to witness a return to the technique – and most of all, emotional wallop – that even today continues to give his films an enduring life as both entertainment, and enlightenment." | 74% Fresh.

"Hope Springs" Columbia, US | DIR: David Frankel CAST: Meryl Streep, Steve Carell, Tommy Lee Jones | NPR: "Contrasting the cookie-cutter rom-com ad campaign, Hope Springs comes as a pleasant surprise: Vanessa Taylor's screenplay is largely a subdued and thoughtful piece, a no-frills look at scenes from this marriage." NYTimes: "An awkward cross between a domestic comedy and a marital tragedy that's laced with laughs, soggy with tears and burdened by a booming, blunt soundtrack that amplifies every narrative beat." | 78% Fresh.

"The Campaign‬" Warner Bros. US | DIR: Jay Roach CAST: Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis | Roger Ebert: "'The Campaign' made me think of 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington' if it had been written by the Onion staff." | Variety: "Before the 2012 presidential election has a chance to get really nasty, The Campaign vigorously swoops in to satirize how low things can go between a pair of rival congressional candidates." | 77% Fresh.

"Nuit #1" Adopt Films, CAN | DIR: Anne Émond CAST: Catherine de Léan, Dimitri Storoge | 69% Fresh | Village Voice: "[it] lingers on the combination of hunger and awkwardness that attends the best one-nighters, showing the unsexy details that most movies elide: interruptions for bathroom breaks, fumbling for condoms, the clumsy logistics of sharing a shower…"
