My Week with Marilyn
The race for Oscar nominations is well on its way. Thus the long list of Orange British Academy Film Awards selections--from which 6000 BAFTA members will choose their five nominations per category and finally, the winners--won't have much impact. The long list below will be winnowed down considerably. It solidifies some already established contenders such as Michelle Williams, whose "My Week with Marilyn" led the field along with "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," with sixteen mentions apiece, Meryl Streep ("The Iron Lady") and Tilda Swinton ("We Need to Talk About Kevin"). And it lends a boost to long-shot Best Actor hopeful Gary Oldman ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy"), but that's about it.

Otherwise the usual Oscar suspects ("The Artist," "The Descendants," "The Help," "Hugo," "Midnight in Paris," "Moneyball") are steady as they go, and Steven Spielberg and David Fincher's Euro-flavored "War Horse" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," respectively, did well in the early round of voting. Almost shut out is "The Tree of Life," which landed just a cinematography nod. And even the Brits didn't vote for Vanessa Redgrave for "Coriolanus."

BAFTA will announce the nominations on Tuesday January 18th. Yes, there's an overlapping British contingent in America and the U.K. that votes for the Oscars. But will enough of them put "Tinker Tailor" at number one to push it onto the Best Picture list? That's where the new preferential voting gets squirrelly.

The asterisks go with the top five vote-getters--for now.

From what I've read and heard (I have yet to see the film), how can "The Iron Lady" be on the short list for Best Picture? Or is this just another case of the Brits looking after their own?

  • Josh | January 7, 2012 1:43 PM

Yes, as per the documentaries looks very much like the Brits looking after their own in a very unsubtle way. Shame as down plays any credibility at all for the BAFTAS.

  • Jo | January 6, 2012 3:16 PMReply

I thought that as per the Oscars, "Life In a Day" was first shown on Youtube in the UK and therefore would be ineligible for the BAFTAS?

    BAFTA:
To be eligible, a feature film must: receive its first public exhibition or distribution in the UK as a theatrical release.

Anne, thank you not criticizing MWWM for topping the long lists. I don't understand why some people has to be so hard with Myweek. I know people's got their own preferences. I am sure this movie will not make it anywhere else. All I can say is Spread the love.

I just hope Williams will win here and at the Oscars.
