The annual Vanity Fair Hollywood cover has arrived in the mail. They've gone back to established movie stars for the front cover: those gorgeous faces include Oscar contenders Chiwetel Ejiofor ("12 Years a Slave") and Julia Roberts ("August: Osage County"), as well as global movie stars Idris Elba ("Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom") and George Clooney ("Gravity").

Was 'The Monuments Men' Inspired by 1963 Antiwar Drama 'The Victors'?

A few reviewers have described "The Monuments Men" as an old-fashioned wartime adventure, and I wouldn’t disagree with that appraisal. Keep in mind, though, that there’s more than one fashion that’s old. While some may liken it to a Hollywood crowd-pleaser of 1940s vintage, I thought Clooney's movie was structured and paced more like some episodic, star-studded international co-production of the 1950s or ‘60s. Oddly enough, there were times when it reminded me a lot of Carl Foreman’s 1963 anti-war drama "The Victors"

Berlin: The Longest Day for 'Monuments Men'

You certainly can’t blame Clooney and his band of merry men. Flanked by Matt Damon and Bill Murray, John Goodman and Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville and Jean Dujardin, Clooney joked and smiled through a series of increasingly inane questions that culminated in a female Mexican journalist asking, apparently in earnest, if the movie star realizes how large a role he plays in the erotic fantasies of women around the world.
