Immersed in Movies: ILM Rearms for 'Pacific Rim' VFX (FEATURETTE)

If there's a mid-year front-runner for the VFX Oscar, it's definitely Industrial Light & Magic's exceptional work on Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim," which is more than just rock 'em sock 'em robots vs. monsters. Aside from the masterfully animated Jaegers and Kaiju, there's also the complex lighting, atmospherics, and water simulation, which take CG mise en scene to a new level of sophistication.

Rinko Kikuchi: Actress on Fire in 'Pacific Rim'

The one element of Guillermo del Toro's gargantuan "Pacific Rim" that does not seem to be dividing audiences into warring camps is the fierce and charismatic performance of Rinko Kikuchi as the gifted giant robot pilot Mako Mori, whose emotions cut through the visual clutter of every scene she's in.

Immersed in Movies: Guillermo del Toro Talks 'Pacific Rim' Robot Porn (VIDEO)

Guillermo del Toro calls it "robot porn." The Mexican filmmaker was at his geekiest last week at Industrial Light & Magic in San Francisco, dissecting a fierce fight at sea in "Pacific Rim" between his enormous robot Jaegers and Kaiju alien monsters. It was like watching his version of "Raging Bull," as he explained how he staged the fight choreography while getting the right height, weight, speed, and volume in CG. But he was just as effusive about the aesthetics of alternating between gritty and surreal.

Trailer Watch: Guillermo del Toro's 'Pacific Rim' is Essentially Godzilla vs. Transformers

The first trailer for Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" has landed. The film is an homage to Japanese giant monster films (called "Kaiju"), and features Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day as humans caught up in a robo-monster war. It looks like Godzilla vs. Transformers, stylishly made.

Studios Go Gigantor at Comic-Con: 'Pacific Rim,' 'Godzilla,' 'Man of Steel,' 'The Hobbit'

The studios have boxed themselves into a corner. Because you can't just keep piling money into VFX to lure audiences to theaters, as their current (failing) tentpole strategy attests. And digital 3-D isn't exactly an event anymore--both "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Ice Age 4" saw lackluster 3-D performance.
