'The Avengers': Who Comes Out Ahead? Everyone. Almost.

When I finally saw "Marvel's The Avengers" Sunday in murky 3-D at Loew's 83rd Street Cinema in Manhattan, like everyone else in the theater, I had a roaring good time.

'The Cabin in the Woods' Review, Whedon & Goddard Talk, Latest Snarky Clip

Lionsgate acquisitions chief Jason Constantine rescued horror comedy "The Cabin in the Woods," co-written by producer Joss Whedon ("The Avengers") and rookie director Drew Goddard, from post-MGM limbo. (Lionsgate paid considerably less for worldwide rights than the $41 million MGM shelled out to make it.

SXSW 2012 Opening Night Film Is Joss Whedon & Drew Goddard's 'The Cabin in the Woods'; Lena Dunham To Premiere HBO Series 'Girls'

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's horror production "The Cabin in the Woods" (Lionsgate, April 13) will open the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival, which runs March 9 – 17, 2012 in Austin, Texas. Whedon will also participate in a key Conversation at the conference on March 10. And SXSW will premiere the first three episodes of SXSW discovery Lena Dunham's ten-part HBO series "Girls" (April) along with a March 13 panel on the series featuring producer Judd Apatow and writer-director-actress Dunham.

The guy's a strong reporter--he's been at the LAT for some 20 years--and his enthusiasm for the Comic-Con universe is genuine. The LAT has been promoing his second annual Hero Complex Film Festival, which took place last weekend.

The Avengers Line-Up Wows Comic-Con: Downey, Jackson, Johansson, Ruffalo, Renner
Iron Man star Robert Downey, Jr. took the podium at Hall H-- after the crowd of 6000 fans were duly wowed by Marvel Studios footage from Joe Johnston's Captain America, a 40s period origin myth starring Chris Evans as the mighty hero and Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, and Kenneth Branagh's Thor, starring Australian Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and Natalie Portman as an earthbound scientist. Downey then brought onto the dais The Avengers crew: Samuel L. Jackson and Nick Fury's two lieutenants, Clark Gregg and Scarlett Johansson, as well as Hemsworth, Evans, Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Mark Ruffalo, who is replacing Edward Norton as Bruce Banner/The Hulk (earlier the fans booed Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige for dumping Edward Norton).
