Review: 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Demands Inside Marvel Knowledge (TRAILER)

The show assumes a fair amount of inside Marvel knowledge on the part of its viewers, which at this point is not much of a stretch. But all the elaborate backstories being spun out don't always promote comprehension. The target audience, one suspects, will have little trouble keeping up.

Comic-Con Immersed in Movies: Whedon and Gregg Talk 'Marvel's Agents of SHIELD,' Separate from 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron'

The tagline says it all for ABC's "Marvels's Agents of SHIELD," which sneaked the pilot Friday at Comic-Con:"Not all heroes are super." In fact, creator Joss Whedon, who directed the pilot, suggested that this rag-tag group of agents without super powers represent the Marvel universe on a much more human scale. Like their mentor, the resurrected Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg, who stars in Whedon's arthouse hit "Much Ado About Nothing"), they investigate the bizarre occurrences that connect The Avengers to ordinary people. (Whedon showed up as the capper for the Marvel panel, with a brief teaser of "The Avengers" sequel, now called "Age of Ultron." The crowd roared.)

Immersed in Movies: Shooting Whedon's 'Much Ado About Nothing' in Black-and-White (VIDEO)

Joss Whedon's marvelous Shakespeare house party in modern dress, "Much Ado About Nothing," is part of a mini black-and-white resurgence this year that also includes Noah Baumbach's screwball "Frances Ha," Alexander Payne's chilly "Nebraska," and Godfrey Reggio's counter-intuitive "Visitors." Maybe it's "The Artist" factor or maybe it's just time to go monochromatic again as a retro exercise in naturalism. For "Much Ado" cinematographer Jay Hunter (who previously worked with Whedon on the "Dollhouse" TV series), shooting in black-and-white was nirvana -- a mixture of film noir and the French New Wave.

Review: Joss Whedon's Verily Updated 'Much Ado About Nothing' (VIDEO)

A healthy dose of disrespect keeps Joss Whedon’s “Much Ado About Nothing” from toppling into the swamp of sensibilities that so often swallows up Shakespeare updates – those well-intentioned “reimaginings” that put a cast in new clothes and new attitudes, and thus render the dialogue even dustier than it already might seem (at least to audiences who wouldn’t go to an Elizabethan play without the barrel of a revolver stuck up their collective nostril).
