'The One I Love' Multi-Tasker Mark Duplass Explains His New Indie Paradigm

I’ll be perfectly honest with you: the way I work on a micro-budget makes me more money and makes me more creatively satisfied than if I was doing movies at a 4-to-$7-million level. It sounds crazy, but I now have the connections in the industry so that I can borrow cameras and I can borrow locations. Everybody works for [a small flat fee per} day — whether you’re a PA or a director, whoever you are. It’s all Communism. But you get points, and everybody’s an owner in the movie.

WATCH: Mark Duplass & Elisabeth Moss Deepen Their Relationship in Mysterious 'The One I Love' Trailer

The greatest asset of Sundance entry “The One I Love," which RADiUS-TWC in finally releasing in theaters August 15, is a central mystery that no one wants to reveal. Thus the trailer and all the marketing materials are deliberately vague, as are interviews with Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss and directors Charlie McDowell (son of Malcolm) and Justin Lader. A first trailer doesn’t delve into the specifics except to say that "Love" is not your typical relationship drama.

Katie Aselton is yet another indie actress-writer-director who has taken matters into her hands. There's no point in waiting around for careers to come to you. With some financial freedom from FX hit comedy series "The League," in which she stars with her multi-hyphenate husband Mark Duplass, who directed her, with brother Jay, in "The Puffy Chair," Aselton co-wrote, directed and stars in the R-rated thriller "Black Rock" which opens May 17 in theaters and VOD.

Duplass Brothers Kidnap Hollywood and The New York Times Magazine

They call each other Dupes and keep their brotherly spirit at the fore. In a New York Times Magazine profile of the Mark and Jay Duplass, Gavin Edwards details the pair's evolution from a budget of $3 (2002's "This is John") to $40 million comedies. Their partnership is thrilling to watch (our video interview with Jay and Mark here). As Edwards writes, "While rock ’n’ roll brothers (the Davies, the Gallaghers) seem to thrive on fistfights, filmmaking brothers (the Coens, the Farrellys) often achieve a state of mind-meld."
