Meet the Press
[Tribeca daily dispatch by Eugene Hernandez, photos by Brian Brooks.]
But, why did it take so long for New York to get a film festival like this, asked one uninformed journalist. While New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, embarking on a re-election campaign, humorously quipped that he's only been Mayor for less than four years so he couldn't do more, TFF co-founder Jane Rosenthal went out of her way to give credit to the city's prestigious New York Film Festival. "We have to give a nod to Lincoln Center," Rosenthal said, "That is the grandfather festival here in New York City. We'd like to do more things with the New York Film Festival -- we can all co-exist. We do nod to that festival." On a more serious note, Mayor Bloomberg offered, "This is a festival that I think reaffirms the renaissance, the revival, and the future of Lower Manhattan." Rosenthal offered, "As the festival continues to mature, the program has grown to reflect that diversity," citing this year's nearly 60 world premieres. "This festival represents creativity, cultural diversity and the power of film," weighed in Rosenthal's typically quiet co-founder and business partner Robert DeNiro. Another line of questioning about reporters at the hour-long press conference was the Tribeca Film Festival as a marketplace. Will it become the next Sundance? When will it have its "Sex, Lies, and Videotape"? Will deals be announced during this year's event? "We are looking to create a marketplace, but that happens and it happens slowly," said Rosenthal; "You have to remember that this is our fourth festival in three years." She added that fest organizers are aware of the feedback coming from the film community, and she said, "We are taking that criticism." Continuing, Rosenthal cited "Winter Solstice" from Paramount Classics and "House of D" from Lions Gate Films, two Tribeca 2004 titles that are currently in release. Looking ahead to this next 10 days of films, TFF executive director Peter Scarlet, while not wanting to favor any of the 250 films screening in Tribeca, did recall his time back at the San Francisco International Film Festival when then unknowns Mike Leigh and Spike Lee were introduced to American audiences. For TFF 2005, he's high on a trio of narrative competition filmmakers, namely Alicia Scherson from Chile ("Play"), Li Shaohong from China ("Stolen Life"), and Ilya Khrzhanovsky from Russia ("4"). "These are the names that I think you'll be remembering in a few years," said Peter Scarlet. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg speaks at Thursday's press conference, to his left is Charles Gargano of the Empire State development Corporation, and to his right is TFF co-founder Craig Hatkoff. Maybe my unconscious mind is too mercenary for that. It made me not want to have kids and I know that's mean to say but honestablished is supposed to be a good thing right? Oh oh oh I have to say this too cause it freaked me out when I found out what the deal was. Tell me again, I want to hear who broke my faith in all these years, who lays with you at night when I'm here all alone, remembering when I was your own. Posted by Andre on Apr 21, 2005 at 06:35PM
