At last year's Tribeca Film Festival, which marked the debut of the Tribeca All Access program for filmmakers of color, I moderated a discussion entitled "Diversifying America Cinema" and wrote an article that surveyed industry leaders on the lack of ethnic diversity within the independent film industry. Sadly, in the year since the panel and survey, not much seems to have changed for filmmakers of color seeking representation within the business. Yet, TAA filmmakers are forging ahead with new movies and two 2004 Tribeca All Access participants are back this year.

Natalia Almada, at the first Tribeca All Access last year with the doc project "To The Other Side" (Al Otro Lado), is back this year with the finished film screening in competition. Almada told indieWIRE that her meetings last year led to finding funding from Latino Public Broadcasting and the Sundance Documentary Fund. Her meetings also yielding a key connection with Cara Mertes from PBS' P.O.V., which Almada hopes will air the movie next year.

"Al Otro Lado", exploring the 200-year tradition of corrido music, is the story of a composer who faces the choice of drug trafficking or crossing the border into the U.S. unlawfully.

Aside from such concrete benefits of TAA participation, Almada explained that, for filmmakers of color, Tribeca All Access is "saying to the industry that our diverse voices and our point of view are important (and) that they start becoming part of the mainstream media." She added, "To have the big Tribeca Film Festival conquer that and give it validity is important, I think it has the potential to start to change the media a little bit and the mainstream industry starts to listen to these different voices and points of view that we are trying to get across."

Dallas Mitchell Brennan, the writer-producer winner of the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Award at TAA 2004, also made the leap from TAA participant to a screening at TFF with the basketball/hip hop film "Rock The Paint," directed by Phil Bertelsen. Brennan announced yesterday that he would partner with musician Wyclef Jean's Platinum Sound Recording Studios to produce a slate of movies. Jean, with a pair of movie already in producer, composed the score for the movie. Brennan's Wren Court has nine projects in development.

Finding funding for a project, and ultimately securing distribution for a film, is hard for independents and for filmmakers of color can be an even greater hurdle. "I think that it’s a little bit harder when you are coming from a different cultural perspective than the mainstream," Almada told indieWIRE during a conversation here in Tribeca, "People are scared and they don’t now if they are going to profit, I think (Tribeca All Access is really helpful, it makes a bigger difference for the 30 people who are here."

"I think for me, one of the things I realized, especially in trying to get the funding, and now looking at distribution," Almada concluded, "A lot of companies have said, 'We really love your film but we don’t know how we are going to sell it'."

"Its frustrating for filmmakers because we are told at NALIP (the National Association of Latino Independent Producers conference) that the Hispanic market is so big, and then you give (the industry) a product and they say to you that they don’t know how to market it and you think, 'I can't market my own film. it’s a really frustrating situation, I don’t know that we as filmmakers can really do anything more."
