Another Tragic Loss

I can't tell you how many after-school evenings of my adolescence were spent in the backyard with friends, trying to recapture the supernatural power that Reggie Roby possessed. The man did not simply punt a brown object through the air to the opposite side of the field. He launched a brilliant, heroic spiral of a football into the stratosphere, kissing heaven before landing in the arms of a stunned opponent. He was the first black punter in the history of the NFL--or, if that isn't entirely accurate, he was certainly the first black punter to become a full-fledged superstar and role model. That might not mean much to you anti-sports nerdoids, but to an impressionable youngster of nine, it is more important than you could ever imagine. Rest in Peace, Reggie.
