A Trip To Hungary

In just over three hours, Jesse and I will be settling into the first minute--out of FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY--of Bela Tarr's SATANTANGO. I feel really weird right now, like I'm gearing up for Maryland's first Final Four game, or I'm about to go on a first date with a pretty girl that I really, really like. I think the longest movie I've ever sat through in a theatre is THE MOTHER AND THE WHORE (which I also saw at BAM). Though I have had a five-movie day in the same theatre (last year's NYFF at the Walter Reade), it certainly won't compare to this experience. If it captures even a fraction of the magic of WERCKMEISTER HARMONIES, it could be one of the all-time greats. I'll let ya know how it goes. Obviously I'm a nerd, but I am so fucking excited for this!

For all of you sissies out there who can't handle the Tarr, there's always COCAINE ANGEL, which is playing at 9pm tonight, tomorrow night, Monday night, and Tuesday night. You're only excuse for missing SATANTANGO is COCAINE ANGEL. The ONLY excuse. So plan accordingly.
