ROOFTOP FILMS

Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone for coming out last night for the SILVER JEW screening at Barbes. It was really fun. Though waking up this morning was kinda rough, for the night didn’t end at Barbes. It shifted over to Kuntry Karaoke at Hank's Saloon, where a good bit of whiskey said hello to my esophagus. But it was a ton of fun, so I'm not complaining.

Speaking of fun, tonight was a bit of a blast. But, man, it felt like an entire week or something. First up was the True/False screening at IFC Center, followed by a face-stuffing sushi bender at the Florida Film Commission’s party at Jeollado, followed by the Woodstock Film Festival launch party at Libation, followed by the IFC party for THE LAST WINTER at 200 Orchard, followed by the True/False loft party. Pretty exhausting, but one of those good exhaustings. If there is such a thing.

I’m going to start posting about the NYFF instead of waiting for the actual festival to happen, so get ready for that. But that ain't happenin' right now. I’m too tired. Instead, before we get to the real purpose of today’s column, I would like to highly recommend all of you IFP marketers to check out the screenings of FRONTRUNNERS and A RUBBERBAND IS AN UNLIKELY INSTRUMENT. Seriously, watch both of them. Do it. Seriously. Seriously. Do it.

And now, let us get to the meat on today’s plate…

While I was only able to attend a few Rooftop Films events this summer, they were all great nights. This week marks your last chance to see what everyone’s talking about, with three final nights of Rooftop action.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19th, 2007: IFP NARRATIVE LAB SNEAK PREVIEWS

Open Road Park (E. 12th St. Between 1st Ave. and Ave. A, East Village) 8:30pm

Wednesday’s musical guest is none other than the legendary Dr. Frank of The Mr. T Experience! As for the films, I can personally recommend the sneak preview of Alex Karpovsky’s GENERAL IMPRESSION OF SIZE AND SHAPE, which takes the basic approach of his debut THE HOLE STORY and improves on it immeasurably. It’s a really, really phenomenal work. Mark my words, GISS is going to make a splash on the festival circuit next year, so catch a glimpse of it on Wednesday night so you can tell everyone that you knew about it way back when.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st, 2007: ROOFTOP SHOTS (SHORT FILMS)
Open Road Rooftop Project (350 Grand St. @ Essex, Lower East Side) 8pm

Show up at 8 to check out the music of Frances, which I’ve heard nothing but great things about, and then settle in for a night of short films, featuring “The Tourist” from everyone’s favorite New-York-City-by-way-of-Carolina-short-filmmaking-twin-brother-duo, The Israel Brothers!

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd, 2007: KING CORN (SNEAK PREVIEW)

The Old American Can Factory (232 3rd St. @ 3rd Ave., Gowanus/Park Slope) 8pm

Not only do you get a chance to see an acclaimed film, KING CORN, on closing night, but the night’s musical guest is none other than Ola Podrida! They go on at 8 sharp, so get there early so you don’t miss one single note.
