Allow me to point everyone in the direction of Franco Piavoli's luminous Blue Planet (Italy, 1982), which gets a one-week revival run starting today at The Pioneer Theater. While Blue Planet more superficially recalls the experimental landscape cinema of Godfrey Reggio and Peter Hutton, as it progressed, I felt a more direct emotional connection to Victor Erice's The Spirit of the Beehive. Not much happens in Blue Planet in a dramatic sense, but I recommend it as a welcome respite from the hustle-and-bustle of New York City living in the summer. Do yourselves a favor and see Blue Planet in a theater while you have the chance.
