"Boredom at Its Boredest" by Michael Tully

After Last Season, aka, WhatTheHUH????

I was going to do a mock post throwing in my own .04 cents about the Where The Wild Things Are trailer, but I hate sounding like a crabby old man—seriously, one scroll down the main indieWIRE blogs page the other day and I was smothered into submission. Too. Much. Overkill. World. Please. Calm. Down.

Fortunately, I’ve discovered another trailer that actually deserves some serious contemplation. I would thank David Lowery and Yen Tan for pointing me in its direction, but it’s strange to say “thank you” to someone when they’ve spun your brain into a tiny trillion cowering and frightened pieces.

The trailer is for a “movie” called After Last Season, yet if you watch the “trailer” it’s hard to believe this is an actual “movie.” It’s like Todd Haynes lost his mind after Safe and was hired to direct a series of cable access sci-fi infomercials.

In a world where it feels like we know everything about a movie before we even watch it, a trailer like this prods that mysterious, special closet of my brain where my imagination is tickled like it was when I was a kid. Thankfully, I didn’t watch this trailer when I was a kid, for I might be in a straight-jacket right now.

I hope you’re sitting down. I hope a loved one is nearby. I hope it’s daylight. I hope you’ll be okay…

“Some of you continue to confuse incompetence and incoherence with depth and mystery.”

Chris, I’ve had this discussion for years and I still believe strongly that, in some extreme cases, exceptional incompetence and incoherence is as magical a gift as premeditated and intentional genius. Not all the time, mind you, but in the case of something like Troll 2 or a trailer like After Last Season, to simply shrug it off is a real shame. You’re missing out on some amazing brain stimulation.

you know, i have been super psyched to see The Room for the last few days. Then I found this trailer.

I just feel like this is too, too perfect.

But more importantly, if this only does an LA release, I am so happy I moved.

Some of you continue to confuse incompetence and incoherence with depth and mystery.

The lighting….positively brilliant.

I think Benten has just found their next release….

Your investigatory skills were good, Bryan P, but yours are better, E! Still, I don’t know what to make of all this. It’s like a genuinely scary thriller when all of a sudden you’re not sure if you can trust your own dog anymore. I’m too spun to wrap my head around any/all explanations.

It appears to be an honest effort at an honest movie. I just found this interview with Mark Region: http://knoxroad.wordpress.com/2009/03/27/knox-road-exclusive-writerdirector-mark-region-talks-about-after-last-season/

More stunned citizens can be found here, though I hope our little comments thread keeps going!

It will not end until we get the full story of what the Christ this movie is. Will the real Mark Region (pseudonym?) please stand up??

Mr. Poyser, your investigatory skills are to be commended, but you have only proceeded to blow my mind even further. I’m walking lopsided right now, yet i haven’t stood up in over an hour. When will this vortex ever end???

I thought that the ceiling fan in the MRI room was a nice touch though…

The last half of my workday was also spun into a obsessive vortex courtesy of Lowery pointing me to that brain-melter of a trailer. The only non-incredulous mention of the film I could find in my hour-plus of googling was this…

Okay, that “movie” was shot on 35mm??? The mind boggles, but if you look closely at clip #2 on their website, the “telepathy” scene, you can see little scratches and dirt on some of the shots.

So, either this is one of the best conceptual “prank” art pieces ever, or a completely delusional person with no filmmaking experience (or perhaps even filmVIEWING experience) got their hands on a 35mm camera and made a towering monument to cinematic ineptitude that could rival TROLL 2, THE ROOM and Ed Wood’s entire oeuvre. But that’s just based on the trailer. We’ll have to see the whole movie, to be sure. If it exists.

Lab coats. Needs more lab coats.

thanks for ruining my day, mike.

“They’ve got printers in the basement you can use.”

Huh?
