Film of the Day

"Come and See" (Elem Klimov, 1985, Russia)

Seriously, this is one of the most excruciating, grueling works of cinema that has ever been created. And I mean that in a good way. Apparently, they hypnotised the child actor (who looks eerily like a young David Lynch) to draw out such a strange and haunting performance. Spielberg jacked the verite-like slaughter scenes for "Schindler's List" and Malick swiped the low-to-the-ground camera sweeps for "Thin Red." This is filmmaking at its most vital and profound and exhilarating. Buy it or rent it RIGHT NOW.
