Movie Events in NYC This Weekend

As usual, lots of good stuff happening, cinematically speaking, in New York this weekend...

--The exemplary Rooftop Films delivers two very special sneak previews. Friday night, in Williamsburg--where the film was actually shot--experience the hilariousness that is Jeremy Saulnier's MURDER PARTY, which is like THE BREAKFAST CLUB meets FRIDAY THE 13TH or some shit. Saturday night, screening in Gowanus, just on the fringes of Park Slope--where much of it was shot--experience the subtle perfection that is Aaron Katz's QUIET CITY. (Oh yeah, if there's a party scene with some weird guy who kinda looks and acts like me, you're just hallucinating.)

--Saturday at 6:30pm at The Pioneer there is a very special screening of the Russian film MY FRIEND IVAN LAPSHIN, which had a troubled production history but has been widely hailed as one of the finest Russian films ever made (COME AND SEE challenges you to a duel, MY FRIEND IVAN LAPSHIN!). The Film Society of Lincoln Center's Richard Pena will be on hand to introduce it. So go see this then jet to Gowanus for some QUIET CITY action.

--As for the multiplex, while I have yet to see any of the Bourne movies, I am looking very forward to THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, as I'm now convinced that Paul Greengrass is one of our finest directors and the reviews I've read seem to say that this is a truly groundbreaking spectacle. Paul Greengrass is a s-t-u-d, yo.

--But more important than that is another film that is getting a wide release. Yes, my friends, I'm talking about HOT ROD. Why in the hell is the release of this film such a momentous occasion? Because it will be the first time Danny McBride has been in a big Hollywood movie! Of course, once THE FOOT FIST WAY comes out later this fall, everyone will know who Danny is, and by the time THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is released a year from now, he will be well on his way to become a full-fledged movie star. Speaking of THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS... no, I'll tell you later...
