I was going to write something suggesting everyone support the theatrical release of Kelly Reichardt's OLD JOY, but producers Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen have done it so much better than I ever could. I received this email from them a little while ago. I wish all producers were like this...
Kelly Reichardt’s OLD JOY started its theatrical release at the Film Forum in New York last night. If you came out to one of the showings, thank you! It was a lot of fun, and honestly very very exciting.
If you’re in New York this weekend please check it out. The first weekend is absolutely the most important for the film’s life in theaters. If you have seen the film and enjoyed it, now is the time to recommend it. It will make a difference.
We traveled with OLD JOY from festival to festival through Europe and the states. We went into our first screenings with no idea how the film would be received, only how the film had moved us when we watched it for the first time ourselves. Meeting folks along the way after screenings, or here and there at coffee shops, bars, or in lines at festivals, the conversations that started out about the film often opened up and led to friendships. So it makes sense that many of you who are receiving this e-mail are friends that we have met along the way.
So now that OLD JOY will be in theaters this weekend (and on a beautiful 35mm print), all of you have the chance to get out and experience it (even if for a second time) as it should be experienced—hopefully the film will continue to bring people together.
The schedule, with links for the trailer and website where you can purchase tickets is below. Please send this to everyone you know.
Here’s Manohla Dargis’ review that ran in the New York Times yesterday. It’s a great review and contains some information about the film:
Throughout the next few months OLD JOY will be playing around the country, so please recommend it to your friends living outside of New York too! The OLD JOY website has dates for other cities and will be updated.
Until then, thanks for your support. Please let us know what you think.
All the best,
Jay and Lars
