I never cease to amaze myself. Really. You would think a fella who spends so much of his time watching college basketball might have an edge up on the amateurs who surface at tourney time and fill out their brackets with no knowledge whatsoever. You would think wrong.
I am already out of the running. Two of my four Final Four teams were victims of shocking first round upsets. Well of course they were! So much for Syracuse putting it together and using their experience to grind their way to St. Louis. So much for a thrilling UNC/Kansas regional final.
At least I know that I suck and think it's funny that I'm so pathetically bad when it comes to picking these games. I only have five bucks on the line and don't plan on doing any more betting. But it's the principle of the thing. Can't I get things right one year??? I guess not. Not to mention the fact that fucking Maryland is getting geared up for their big second round NIT game. This season is an absolute joke, man.
That said, I can now simply give into the moment and root for upsets as they surface, not caring what happens to my brackets. Again, I challenge anti-sports nerdoids to find something more beautifully dramatic than lowly Vermont stepping in and beating national powerhouse Syracuse in overtime, their universally loved coach in his final season, balling like a little baby with his giddy players, a victory for the small-timers, for the underachievers, proof that dreams really do come true.
You can try to write this stuff, and you can do it relatively well (see "Hoosiers" and "Rudy"), but it's nothing like the real thing.
