The Truth Behind the Legend

Sorry I've been missing in action (all six or seven of you who read this), but big things have been brewing. The documentary project to end all documentary projects has just completed its first week of principal photography. Jesse Sweet and I traveled from Charleston to Nashville to Athens and back, in search of the answer to one of popular music's most mysterious legends: the real truth behind the Phil Collins hit "In the Air Tonight."

Combining "man on the street" interviews, expert testimonials, a montage of professional musicians playing the unforgettable drum fill, unflinchingly raw recreations of the best stories, and much, much more, our project will tell the real truth behind the song. Finally, we will track down Phil himself, and find out the truth once and for all. After only one week, it's looking like his explanation of a "marriage break-up song" is shamefully inadequate. Phil has dark secrets, and we are going to expose them.

If you have your own version of the story, we would love to get you on tape at some point this summer and/or early fall. This will most likely be happening in the NYC area. We want these interviews to be spontaneous, so don't go into detail when you contact me. Just know that we want to hear your story, we want to know where you heard it, and we want to know whether or not you too are a believer.

Write me at if you think you might have some answers. Thank you,

Michael Tully

What about "Sussudio"? It seems so light and syrupy but I bet there is a really surprising subtext going on there. Ask Phil.

    You are a genius.
