Tonight's "Independents Night" screening at the Walter Reade Theater (6:30pm!) is the fantastic documentary THE HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS...BOUND TO LOSE, which tells the story of Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber, legendary pioneers of the freak folk movement. The documentary is worth the price of admission alone, but you should really go for the post-show performance. You'll be pleasantly surprised when you see who's sitting in with the band (he was actually in the Rounders when they first started playing).

I got to spend time with Peter during the magical Sarasota Film Festival, and he's an absolute sweetheart. So are Paul Lovelace and Sam Wainwright Douglas, the film's co-directors. Unfortunately, I'm stuck in Maryland, but I'll be there in spirit. Save a seat for me, guys...
