Last week, Xavier Beauvois attended The New York Film Festival to participate in a press conference for his new film Of Gods and Men. After the conference was over, Beauvois was urged to pause for a photo, but instead took a moment to light a cigarette on the stage of the Walter Reade. A small panic ensued, with Richard Peña graciously and briskly escorting the director out of the theater and into the exterior courtyard, where I finally caught up with him for a quick photo. On the way out, Walter Reade staff were seen rolling their eyes; "That's two; he and Catherine Deneuve are the only two I've seen light up in here..." Oh, the hazards of being an international film festival...
