HBO Summer Documentary Series Very Women-Centric

Last week, HBO announced their summer documentary series and it is very women-centric from the content to the majority of women directors of these films. Some of the women-centric docs include Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer about the infamous Russian punk group who were arrested last year after performing a "punk prayer" in Russia's main cathedral. There's also Miss You Can Do It, which is about Abby Curran, the first woman with a disability to compete in the Miss USA pageant who starts a pageant for girls with disabilities.

Three Women-Centric Films Opening on August 16th

If you survive the summer of male centric super hero and action films, mark your calendars for August 16th because three women-centric films will be opening. While August has been in the past seen as Meryl Streep's time of the year, this year August Osage County will open in the fall.

Novelist Claire Messud Schools Publishers Weekly

Claire Messud's latest novel, The Woman Upstairs, has been getting a ton of great critical buzz (and was also in the recent women's fiction satire video Ron Charles released). In an interview with Publishers Weekly, Messud is asked about the likeability of her main character Nora. She completely calls out the interviewer--illuminating the sexism in a question that would not be posed to a male author in that way or asked at all.

The Directing Workshop for Women 2013 Showcase

On Monday night I stepped into the Directors Guild Building for the first time to attend the annual showcase for the AFI's Directing Workshop for Women My feelings about that place are pretty negative. My general perception is that the people who run the show over there don't give a shit about women and their careers. I wished the people who run that place could have seen what I saw that night -- a whole program of women directed films. Probably happens there rarely. There was such joy in that place, and personally, it is exciting to see a whole program celebrating women directors instead of always talking about how hard things are for women directors.
