Is 50 Shades of Grey The Next Big Thing?

As The Hunger Games was getting ready to take the box office by storm, a 40-something former TV executive from England with two kids E.L. James (not her real name) and her literary agent Valerie Hoskins were sitting out in Hollywood taking pitches from all the studios who were all falling over themselves to get the rights to make the film version of her books (there are three of them).

Is Princess Culture Redeemable?

I am extremely ambivalent about the whole princess thing.  If I never saw another princess anywhere it would be too soon.  But I live in the real world and write about Hollywood and Hollywood is infused with princesses.  In fact,  we've got two big princess movies coming down the pike this year.  This week's Mirror, Mirror and this summer's Snow White and the Huntsman.  I will never forget when I heard Geena Davis talk about her research on girls and the media, and how the research showed the most girls believe they can be princesses because that is basically all that they see girls doing onscreen.  Of course we all know that princess is not a job description and while there are very few princesses in real life, they seem to dominate girls lives on film.

Guest Post: Growing into Your Voice: The Resonance of “Rockaway”

I was a shy girl growing up. I was studious, reserved, and well-mannered. I’d very selectively raise my hand in school, secretly afraid of delivering the wrong answer and facing judgment by my teachers or peers. Storytelling was the one place I felt there were no wrong answers, just truths about life, masked as fiction. I felt safe as long as I had this magical, elusive forum to voice my dreams, ambitions, and desires without worrying about the consequences.

The Hunger Games

I spent most of the beginning of The Hunger Games kind of holding my breath in hopes that the movie would live up to all the hype I put on it.  I loved the books A LOT.  I also put a whole heap of unjustified responsibility on it and felt that it just had to hit a certain level so that the conversations about female protagonists who are strong and active in their lives could move to a new level.
