Nora Ephron Dies at 71

I'm sitting here reeling from the news that Nora Ephron has died.  No one even knew she was sick and now she is gone.  The loss to movies, and especially to women in movies, cannot be underestimated.  This is a woman who was an Oscar nominated screenwriter three times over for Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle.  Not many people can boast one Oscar nomination and she got three.  She was a successful writer who then at 50 became a director.  In a business that prides itself on youth, and precisely speaking, male youth, this woman decided to become a director after a successful career as a journalist and screenwriter.

Could Middle of Nowhere Be a Game Changer?

I had the privilege last week of attending the LA Film Festival gala of Middle of Nowhere written and directed by Ava Duvernay.  If you recall, Ava is the first African American woman to win the best director award at the Sundance Film Festival which premiered the film this past January.  Unlike most film festival events I've been to, this audience was predominantly an audience of color and it was beautiful to be a part of especially when Elvis Mitchell who ran the post screening q and a said "hello black people and all the rest of you."

Happy 40th Birthday Title IX

This past weekend was the 40th anniversary of Title IX.  This is a big deal.  What most people don't know is that Title IX is not an actual law -- it is one section of the of the Educational Amendments of 1972 -- and in actuality it has nothing to do with sports.  It has to do with equal access in education.   It was signed into into law by Richard Nixon.

The Invisible War

There are some movies that just gut you.  They just hit you hard and twist until you are a spent rag ready to get up and fight against all the injustices that have just been witnessed.
