Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Hope Solo is a competitive athlete. She's won Olympic gold. World Cup Silver. The Golden Glove Award at this summer's Women's World Cup. She is probably the best female goalkeeper in the world.

Yet, those judges on Dancing With the Stars made this incredibly fit woman feel inadequate.

In an interview she did with Anderson Cooper after she was booted off the show she talked about how naive she was going into the competition, and how she was told she had too much muscle and wasn't dainty enough.

I just got back from a meeting and broke open the list of indie spirit nominees for 2012 and I am utterly dispirited at the lack of female voices throughout the categories.

I am looking back at the list from last year and two female directed films -- Winter's Bone and The Kids Are All Right -- got multiple nominations.

This year not so much.

A variety of these lists that will be coming at us over the next months and they will be very male centric. If people were under the illusion that this was a good year for female voices, this list is an indicator of how much work needs to be done. This so makes me want to start the female film awards. Who is in?

Television

This TV season has lots of female created and female starring shows. Some stink (Whitney), some are great (Up All Night), and most kind of fall somewhere in the middle (2 Broke Girls). (For a an analysis of the Whitney Cummings phenomenon check out this piece from Emily Nussbaum in the New Yorker. I guess the good news is that we've come to the place where women can create shows as middling and mediocre as their male colleagues and it's not the end of the world. We know we will have more shows about women created by women (not enough, but some) in the future because women watch TV and advertisers want women.

Dirty Trailer for Young Adult - written by Diablo Cody

If you think you knew what Young Adult was about, this will throw a wrench in those thoughts. Just please don't play this around the kids - it's good and dirty.

Film opens in NY and LA Dec 9 and then rolls out across the country.
