A Night With Barbra Streisand

Monday evening, Barbra Streisand received the 40th Chaplin Award given by the Film Society at Lincoln Center. As you can guess the award was named after the first recipient Charlie Chaplin. Previous awardees have included the biggest of the big like Laurence Olivier, Federico Fellini, Gregory Peck, Martin Scorcese and every other big name. Looking at the list which has included several women like Susan Sarandon, Jane Fonda and Elizabeth Taylor, I couldn't help but notice that every other woman who had been feted was an actress, while the men who were honored included actors as well as directors.

Is Barbra Streisand to Direct Film About Margaret Bourke-White and Erskine Caldwell?

To be honest there is some confusion about this story. 411 is reporting that Barbra Streisand was going to direct Skinny and Cat to star Cate Blanchett about the lives of photographer Margaret Bourke-White and writer Erskine Caldwell. But now it looks like both Streisand and Blanchett are no longer attached to that film. Rachel Weisz is now set to star as Bourke-White in Skinny and Cat and they are just looking for a new director.

Interview with Anne Fletcher - Director of The Guilt Trip

Barbra Streisand has not had the lead in a film since The Mirror Has Two Faces (which she directed) in 1996. She's back onscreen as Joyce Brewster, Seth Rogan's mom in the road comedy The Guilt Trip. The biggest challenge for the film is making Barbra look like a regular mom and while I know they tried really hard, Barbra is Barbra and she's not the kind of person who can just disappear. There were times when the interactions between mother and son were painful and not terribly funny, but seeing Barbra attempt to eat a massive steak in a eating contest is a high point. It's also interesting to see her character discover that by getting out of the house and going on the road that her life is not over, and that she can still find love.

First Look: The Guilt Trip - Directed by Anne Fletcher

Barbra Streisand co-stars in Anne Fletcher's The Guilt Trip as the mother of Andy (Seth Rogen) who agrees to go on a cross-country road trip with her son. Let's hope that the film is not one long Jewish mother stereotype.
