Women and Hollywood

Melissa Silverstein is the founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender parity across the entertainment industry.

She is also the co-founder and Artistic Director of The Athena Film Festival. The 4th annual festival will take place from February 6-9, 2014 at Barnard College in NYC.

Melissa recently published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site.

Watch This: Gwyneth Paltrow Saving Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man 3

In a new TV spot for the upcoming Iron Man 3, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) does the saving. The clip shows Potts in a full suit of armor swooping in to save her beau Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) telling him "I got you."

When the news surfaced last week that Jessica Chastain was circling a part in Iron Man 3 I was a bit surprised. I just doesn't seem to be her type of film. She does not scream big Hollywood action flick. Look at her body of work. Last year she starred in five films and was recognized with an Oscar Nomination for her work in The Help and received many accolades for her work in Take Shelter and for The Tree of Life. She is basically the "it girl" of the indie world.

If this year’s Oscars known as the "women's superbowl" only attracted half (39.3 million to be exact) the viewing audience of that great male gladiator event, that’s still way more than enough people to make an enormous impact on the body ideals and aspirations of girls and women who buy the fashion lines and accessories and makeover surgeries (AKA “aesthetic medicine”) such as the silicone implants and butt lifts that inspire fans to become clones of their favorite hot movie star.
