Change in Release Pattern for Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty

Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to her Oscar winning The Hurt Locker was supposed to open wide into the crowded Christmas market on December 19. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Sony is now looking to platform Zero Dark Thirty on the date and have it open wide in early January.

New Trailer: Zero Dark Thirty - Directed by Kathryn Bigelow

I love that they are keeping many details about this movie so closely held. It makes people even more excited. The fact that a woman directed film is one of the most anticipated of the awards season makes me smile.

Academy Names 176 New Members

In an attempt to diversify its membership, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 176 people to become members. There are just under 6,000 members of the full Academy. Keep in mind that a person is only allowed to be a member of one branch. So for example, Barbra Streisand. She might have been invited for her acting, so if she did not change her branch when she became a director, she does not vote for the best director nominee.

Oscar Winner Kathryn Bigelow Nears Completion of Filming Zero Dark Thirty

So the first female best director winner has now completed filming her follow-up film.  That alone is news.  The film which is now called Zero Dark Thirty tells the story of the capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden.  What is interesting is while this will clearly be a thriller with lots of war elements like The Hurt Locker, this film actually has female characters in it.  The female cast members include Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Ehle and newly crowned Tony winner Nina Arianda.  I have no idea if their parts are significant in any way but at least they exist in this film since there were no women in The Hurt Locker.

Jessica Chastain Passes on a Part in Iron Man 3

When the news surfaced last week that Jessica Chastain was circling a part in Iron Man 3 I was a bit surprised.  I just doesn't seem to be her type of film.  She does not scream big Hollywood action flick.  Look at her body of work.  Last year she starred in five films and was recognized with an Oscar Nomination for her work in The Help and received many accolades for her work in Take Shelter and for The Tree of Life.  She is basically the "it girl" of the indie world.

Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue 2012

At least they are all dressed.  But all the satin kind of reminds me of a brothel.  Thw women on the power panel which is the actual cover are Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain.  And Jennifer Lawrence is in the top center.  Smart of them to include the awesome Adepero Oduye.

Where are the Women?

It has not been a good couple of months for women on shortlists here in the UK. Back in December the nation presided over the BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist: 10 men and 0 women. Yesterday, BAFTA announced the shortlist for the Orange Wednesday’s Rising Star Award: 5 men and 0 women.

The Golden Globe Nominations: The Women

I like the Golden Globe show cause it's always goofy.  People drink, say funny stuff and you get TV and film people in one place.  People who are awards watchers don't take it too seriously because they have two different film categories -- comedy and drama -- which no other awards do.  The also kiss a lot of celebrity butt in order to have a star ladened show rather than a serious awards show.  So you must not take anything these people do too seriously.

Talking Oscars and Feminism with Scott Feinberg of the Hollywood Reporter

Check out this audio interview I did with Scott Feinberg - Oscar analyst at the Hollywood Reporter. We talked about the Oscar race with a feminist slant. I really enjoyed the conversation.
