Trailer Watch: Girl Most Likely - Written by Michelle Morgan and Co-Directed by Shari Springer Berman

This is Kristen Wiig's first leading role onscreen since Bridesmaids.  I hope people are not expecting Bridesmaids 2 because this looks a bit more intense.  Formerly titled Imogene, Wiig plays a playwright who has a nervous breakdown and is forced to move back in with her estranged mom (Annette Bening).

Erasing Gilda Radner's Legacy

I read with extreme shock that several of the Gilda's Clubs around the country were going to change their names Cancer Support Community because many people, especially the young ones, who come in for help don't know who Gilda Radner was.  What a lame reason.

Academy Names 176 New Members

In an attempt to diversify its membership, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 176 people to become members.  There are just under 6,000 members of the full Academy.  Keep in mind that a person is only allowed to be a member of one branch.  So for example, Barbra Streisand.  She might have been invited for her acting, so if she did not change her branch when she became a director, she does not vote for the best director nominee.

Kristen Stewart is Top Earning Actress in Hollywood

The woman with the most Oscars is not the highest paid woman in Hollywood.  According to Forbes, that honor goes to Kristen Stewart who this year will have two monster hits with the current Snow White and the Huntsman which is now at almost $250 million total and the upcoming Breaking Dawn Part 2.  This 21-year-old made $34.5 million.  But all the women on the list still earn less than their male counterparts men by over $160 million dollars.  The top men earned #61 million compared to women earning $200 million.  And I'm guessing the dudes make most of their money from salaries on the films, and women complement their film salaries with endorsements which at times brings in more than the salary for a film.

Interview with Jennifer Westfeldt - Writer and Director of Friends With Kids

I think women should support each other's work, encourage each other's work, help develop each other's voices and I think, ultimately, when we can stop having the conversation about 'women filmmakers', and just talk about 'filmmakers', then we'll know we've really gotten somewhere.

Friends With Kids - Written and Directed by Jennifer Westfeldt

What's interesting about Friends with Kids is that Jennifer Westfeldt has the skills to make a film feel subversive and mainstream at the same time.  The story she tells (which she also produces and directs) is about best friends who want a kid even though they haven't found the partners they want to parent with.  They decide to parent with each other much to the chagrin of their friends who are going down the conventional road.  She asks questions through the different couples about whether the norm is normal, whether you need to find a soul mate to raise a child, what is a soul mate, and whether you stay together for the sake of the kids when you are miserable.  She also shows how hard it is to find a mate in NYC.

Lynne Ramsay Scores BAFTA Directing Nomination

In a year when we will probably not see a female director nominated for any major awards here in the US, the Brits have been smart enough to recognize the Lynne Ramsay did do one of the best directing jobs of the year and nominated her for best director and We Need to Talk About Kevin for Best British Film.
