Stoker- Starring Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman

The media and art that I always tend to be attracted to, some would say, could fall into the disturbing spectrum. I like messy, complicated and at times psychotic female characters. This has ranged from falling in love with Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar in high school, Cindy Sherman’s photography, Diablo Cody’s underappreciated and brilliant Young Adult and my current obsession with Enlightened and American Horror Story: Asylum.

The Academy Celebrates the Career of Ann Roth

A couple of weeks ago I spent the weekend at the Hamptons International Film Festival.  I was able to catch up on a bunch of films and attend some really cool events including a tribute to the costume designer Ann Roth by the Academy.  It's not often that below the line talent gets a celebration of this magnitude, and at times it looked like Ms. Roth wanted to be anywhere but the stage of Guild Hall where everyone was calling her a legend.

Approaching Peak Vagina: Lena Dunham and Amy Poehler Score Rare Female Double Emmy Writing Nominations

The Emmy nominations were released yesterday.  There is a lot of good news to recognize most especially the fact that two women -- Lean Dunham and Amy Poehler -- were nominated for their comedy writing.  According to Nellie at Deadline having two women nominated for comedy writing is a big and not very frequent deal.  The last time it happened was a decade ago.

Nicole Kidman Hits Cannes With Two Films

I continue to be impressed with Nicole Kidman because the woman does not take the easy road in terms of her parts.  She arrived in Cannes with two very different films -- Lee Daniels' The Paperboy where she plays a character reminiscent of her character in To Die For, and Hemingway and Gellhorn in which she plays reporter Martha Gellhorn.

Trailer Watch: Hemingway and Gellhorn

I seriously have not been this excited about a Nicole Kidman movie in a long time. Based on the voice over it should be named Gellhorn and Hemingway but as is typical with women in history, she seems to have disappeared from our consciousness and he is, well...Hemingway.
