Belma Bas Wins Top Award at International Frauen Film Festival for Zephyr

I just am back from Germany where I attended the International Frauen Film Festival, a truly wonderful environment where you can hang out with women working in the film business that you otherwise would never meet.  We also had a couple of great meetings of women who work at women's film festivals (more on that later.)

Guest Post: Elza - A Different Kind of Movie with a French Caribbean Twist

When I was in the advertising business I enjoyed producing powerful commercials, but at the same time I felt there was something missing.  I yearned to tell my stories - to capture life about the people and places close to me, from my viewpoint.

Guest Post: Why I Started the San Francisco International Women’s Film Festival

The genesis of founding the San Francisco International Women’s Film Festival started when I took a Film History II class in 2004 while earning my film degree at San Francisco State University. The focus of the course was to study the 1950’s and present day cinema and during the entire semester, we were never shown a film made or directed by a woman. There was never a discussion about female filmmakers, nor was there ever a topic of reading that covered the matter.

Good News: Women Directed and Women Written Films Fill Sundance Premiere Section

The leading ladies of "Bachelorette."
While there weren't enough films directed and written by women in the competition as I would have hoped, the list of premieres looks at bit different.  Check out the description for Bachelorette- could it be any more like Bridesmaids?  It better be good cause if this starts a trend of more crappy wedding films...

Check out the women directed, women written and women centric films coming to Sundance in January.  Some films could fit into more than one category. (descriptions off the Hollywood Reporter site)

The Sundance 2012 Competition Lineup: The Women

Sundance unveiled the competition lineups.  Here is the first look at the US Dramatic and Documentary competition.  There are 16 films in each category.  In the dramatic category,  3 are directed by women.  2 are written by women and 3 are about women.  That's under 20% female directed.  The documentary category is another story.  Fully 50% of the films are directed (or co-directed) by women.  8 out of 16.  That's very exciting.  And what I immediately noticed is the the women directed docs look at the large over arching issues of our time with several on the economy and healthcare.
